Smuggling Guide — Contraband Loop & Detection Rates

Smuggling is the signature risk-reward loop of San Diego Border Roleplay. Buy contraband on one side, cross the line, sell high on the other — and pray the scanner doesn’t flag your trunk. This guide covers the verified goods loop plus the classic checkpoint roleplay around it.

The goods loop (verified by community runs)

  1. Stock up at the Black Market — the goods shop sits near the Weapon Shop and the Laundromat on the far side.
  2. Known goods and detection rates (community-tested, August 2026):
    • Fake Diamond Ring — $1,000, ~45% checkpoint detection.
    • Crowbar — $1,000, ~45% detection.
    • Fake Artwork — new with the August 16 update (V4852).
    • El Diablo — El Capo exclusive smuggle item (V4852).
    • Cheap starter goods like avocado crates run about $150 in, ~$390 out.
  3. Fill your bag. A batch of five rings ($5,000) fits a single sell trip. The Full Bag badge unlocks when you carry the maximum amount of smuggled goods.
  4. Cross the line. Either:
    • Legal-style crossing — blend into checkpoint traffic and hope the scan misses your cargo, or
    • The tunnel / dirt-path route — leave the highway, follow the dirt path, park at the small white house by the fence and enter the tunnel. The Tunnel Man charges about $500 entry.
  5. Sell to the buyer across the border. Your First Sale badge unlocks on the first completed sale — 14 million players have it.
  6. Launder the cash. Briefcase laundering unlocks the Briefcase Business badge; a single $20,000 briefcase cash-out earns High-Value Haul.

Boat smuggling (new — August 16)

The V4852 update added water crossing routes: take a boat across the bay instead of the checkpoint. Watch out — cars float briefly in water but explode, and the new Coast Guard team patrols the water specifically to intercept boat smugglers.

El Capo — the endgame kingpin

Since V4852, top-tier smugglers can play as El Capo: you spawn in your own mansion with every smuggle item, weapons and a laundry already inside the building. No more black market runs — the entire supply chain lives in your house. Unlock path: not yet published in the change-log; verify in-game.

Detection — what actually flags you

  • Checkpoint scanners — the Border Patrol scanner tool reads your cargo. Cheap goods scan dirty at roughly 45%; some goods scan clean far more often.
  • Money printers carried across without a legal crossing trip first trigger ~90% detection.
  • K9 units — since V4669, confiscated printers no longer ping on scanners or K9s; active cargo still does.
  • Selling smuggled goods only raises your wanted level when an authority is nearby (changed in V4801) — sell when the coast is clear.

Wanted level management

  • Selling, shooting near agents and armed crossings build wanted stars.
  • Jail = 30 seconds per star, or pay $1,000 per star bail from inside.
  • Escape the pursuit to bank the Clean Getaway badge (2.4 million players).
  • Death drops up to $5,000 cash — launder fast, don’t hoard paper.

Smuggling vs. printers vs. heists

Method Risk Skill Notes
Smuggling runs Medium Driving + nerve Scales with bag size and goods choice
Money printers Low (until raided) Setup + patience Best passive income; see the printer guide
Bank / jewelry heists High Team coordination Big scores; watch for the 2X payout events
Trucking job Zero Driving only Honest money from the depot NPC

Mix them: heists for adrenaline, printers for the baseline, smuggling runs when the server’s enforcement is stretched thin.

Roleplaying the checkpoint

Half the fun of smuggling is the scene at the line. Cooperate with agents, roleplay nervous travelers, keep your story straight — the game’s own description promises moderation for rule-breakers, so play the part, don’t just RDM the queue. The best Border Patrol players will send you to secondary inspection and roleplay the whole search; the best smugglers make that scene worth watching.
